Despite Criticism, Nabisco’s Honey Maid Makes 2nd LGBT-Friendly Ad
Earlier this year, Nabisco’s Honey Maid created an inclusive campaign highlighting alternative families, featuring a family with two dads -- but the graham cracker company came under fire from the conservative Christian right. It looks like One Million Moms’ criticism hasn’t deterred Honey Maid from making another LGBT-friendly commercial, however.
As the Huffington Post reports, Honey Maid has put together another campaign for Pride month. The company tweeted a gif last Thursday, coming out in support of the LGBT community with a play on the Human Rights Campaign’s iconic equality symbol: the two equal signs were replaced with two graham crackers.
"What makes a family, family, will always be the same. Share this to show your support for all families #LGBTPride," the tweet reads. The tweet also includes a link to the gif, which you can view here.
On Monday, the snack company also tweeted: "Pride is family. #Pridemonth"
In March, Honey Maid revealed its "This is Wholesome" campaign, which featured short documentaries around non-traditional families, including a family with two fathers. But unsurprisingly, ultra-conservatives took issue with the commercial and the American Family Association off-shoot group One Million Moms called out the graham cracker company, saying in a statement:
"Nabisco should be ashamed of themselves for their latest Honey Maid and Teddy Graham cracker commercial where they attempt to normalize sin. Right away it shows two men with a baby, followed by other families, and ends with different families pictured including the one with two dads. This commercial not only promotes homosexuality, but then calls the scene in the advertisement wholesome."
Earlier this month General Mills’ Lucky Charms cereal launched a similar campaign called, "#LuckyToBe."
"Lucky Charms is launching it’s second #LuckyToBe campaign, celebrating individuality, diversity and inclusiveness and encouraging fans everywhere to share why they are #LuckyToBe," Lucy Charms officials wrote the ad’s YouTube description.
