Old people demonstrate that they can be ultra-violent too, in the comedy action sequel "Red 2."

Unable to compete with the current youth-targeted Marvel juggernauts, the folks at DC Comics seem to be shooting for the more seasoned demographic in this second installment about a group of semi-retired international Bond- and Bourne-like black-ops spies that includes many ages and both sexes.

Pussy-whipped Bruce Willis, his spy-in-training girlfriend Mary-Louise Parker, the cranky and paranoid John Malkovich, the be-banged Russian Catherine Zeta-Jones, the gloriously-ripped, grudge-management poster ninja Byung Hun Lee, the forever-psychotic Anthony Hopkins and the beautifully bad-assed Helen Mirren span the globe from Hong Kong to Russia then Paris and London to outwit assassins and terrorist and iron out a remaining Cold War wrinkle.

Seeing Dame Mirren shoot inside the Iranian embassy; shoeless in seamed stockings atop a grassy knoll; and double-fisted from a laser blue Lotus Exige is all any viewer really needs.

Being blasé about slaughter makes the franchise funny, but the conceit, like its solid stars, grows old quickly. The script is by Jon and Erich Hoeber; they keep it zippy, with retorts such as, "Please don’t tell me you’re crashing with a weapon of mass destruction," and "What happens in the Kremlin stays in the Kremlin." The pair also writes for specific side arms, as revealed in "The ’Red 2’ Experience" multi-part documentary.

In addition to the weaponry extra, spy gear and tactics, the cast and stunts are also explored in the special features, alongside deleted scenes and a gag reel. But seeing Dame Mirren shoot inside the Iranian embassy; shoeless in seamed stockings atop a grassy knoll; and double-fisted from a laser blue Lotus Exige is all any viewer really needs.
